Requirements
  • Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program by a governmental authority, nursing board, or licensing authority with jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas Board of Nursing 217.1).
  • 1 year of registered nurse experience.
  • Current Texas license (or compact state license).
  • Basic Life Support certification accredited by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification accredited by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Responsibilities
  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments considering age-specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults and older adults).
  • Actively anticipates patients and/or patients' family needs and expectations and uses these to develop an appropriate plan of care, utilizing critical thinking and maintaining unit competencies.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessments; completes accurate and timely documentation; coordinates the interdisciplinary plan of care and collaborates with health care team; shares information to advocate for optimal patient care.
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions based on assessments; promptly identifies changes in condition (labs, x-rays, etc.); reports changes and follows up as appropriate; involves patient in plan of care and keeps patient/family informed.
  • Evaluates interventions and modifies care; documents interventions and plan of care modifications timely.
  • Adheres to hospital and nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards; incorporates American Nursing Association standards, professional practice model (Shared governance) and care delivery model (Relationship Based Care).
  • Provides education to patients and families; documents education and discharge plan; assesses competence and obtains feedback; demonstrates effective communication tailored to patient needs.
  • Welcomes and orients patient and family to the unit; reviews personalized plan of care with patient/family every shift; updates white boards and sets daily goals with patient input; explains diets, tests, procedures and medications; makes hourly rounds and communicates return time.
  • Advocates for resources to enhance patient safety; participates in evaluating data to guide unit/department budget decisions.
  • Performs Peer Evaluation to provide feedback; holds coworkers accountable for policy compliance; intervenes when patient safety is at risk.
  • Engages in Performance Improvement initiatives focusing on patient safety, patient satisfaction, core measures, and infection control.
  • Shares professional and technical information with colleagues and students; acts as a resource (preceptor, charge, mentor, unit expert) as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Two years of previous RN experience in a Preoperative, Day Surgery, or Phase II setting.
